Free Halloween Code Breaker Puzzle

The Puzzle Den - Halloween Code Breaker

Here is another crypto-style Halloween puzzle, but this one is for the younger solvers!  All the words on this page have been encoded using the chart shown at the top of the page.  Students will use the chart to decode those words.  This gives them practice with image recognition and spelling.

You can download the puzzle by clicking on the image above or here. If you encounter problems downloading, try downloading from your home computer.  Many schools block downloads from Google Drive on their networks.

If you are looking for puzzles for older kids, try these Crypto-Families.

I have more Halloween themed puzzles on my Halloween Freebies page.  Check it out!

I hope your kids enjoy this puzzle!

Free Halloween Crypto-Family Puzzles

The Puzzle Den - Halloween Crypto-Families

Halloween is only 3 days away!  Here is another free puzzle to help you celebrate this spooky holiday!  (Just click on the picture or here to download and click here for solutions.)

Crypto-Families are lists of related words that have been encoded using a simple substitution.   This means that each letter of the alphabet has been replaced with a different letter of the alphabet.  It's your job as solvers to crack the code!

These puzzles can be difficult to solve.  There are several clues provided for each of the families.  The first clue is the title of the family.  For instance, the first family is called "Candy" and so you should expect each family member to be a type of candy.  The second clue is the picture next to the title.  This is a hint to what the first word is!  (All but the last family have a picture.)  And the last clue is a hint at the bottom of each list giving the answer to one of the letter substitutions.  Try not to use this hint unless you get stuck!

The Puzzle Den - Free Chart for Decoding or Encoding Simple Substitution Ciphers

I also created this chart for decoding crypto-style puzzles.  You can print off and provide them to your students along with the puzzles.  Each chart should be used for one family.  Students can write in their substitutions as they figure them out.  This page could also be used for enciphering your own codes and creating your own crypto puzzles or secret messages!

Since this puzzle best for older solvers, tomorrow I'll post a code style puzzle for the younger lot.

Happy Halloween!

Free Halloween Rebus Puzzles

The Puzzle Den - Halloween Rebus Puzzles - Easier

Only two more weeks until Halloween and time for some new free puzzles!

I've had a request for more rebus puzzles, and since I didn't have any Halloween ones, that seemed like a good idea.  You can download the one above from Google Drive by clicking on the picture, or here.  This one has easier puzzles.  These are pictures that I think younger kids can identify and spell easily enough.

The Puzzle Den - Halloween Rebus Puzzles - Harder

And you can click on this picture, or here, to download the harder version.  This level has more puzzles to solve and harder pictures to figure out.  Is is a gasoline can, just can, or just gas?  This particular puzzle page includes an opposite picture and a 2 word rebus!

You may want to give younger kids the easier version and older kids the harder version.  You can also give the easier page as a warm-up to the harder page.

Download the answer keys here.

Here are some puzzles for you to try to see if you like them!

Happy Halloween!
