Goodreads

It's the end of the year and time for all the year end synopses! I don't keep track of a lot of things, but I have almost always kept track of the books I've read. It started way back in high school in the 80's with a sheet of college lined paper, and today it is all tracked on Goodreads. I'm an ebook reader so my kindle tracks things for me and that makes things easier. I'm currently not on good terms with Amazon, but that said, I have had a kindle for too many years to give it up. And I've tracked books on Goodreads for too long too (and they're owned by Amazon also...Audible too ugh) Anyhow, if you are in any way curious about my 2022 year in books, you can click the link below.

I just managed to hit my goal by reading a bunch of Murderbot Diaries books right there at the end (the first several are novellas). Total books read is 36 with 12,996 pages. The longest book was the Mistborn Trilogy with 2176 pages. I bought it as a combined trilogy and let Goodreads count it as one book, just so I could say I read a book that was 2000 pages long! lol It's silly I know! Anyhow, some good re-reads this year and a couple really good new books. I was blown away by Well's Murderbot books, Howey's Sand sequel, and Chamber's Tea Monk sequel...all so delicious! I also thoroughly enjoyed Sanderson's Mistborn series although I'm not usually into fantasy so much. He does a delightful job of creating a unique (to me) magic system and some kick butt characters!

Well, I could go on and on (just ask my friends and family who are seriously tired of hearing about what Murderbot did today!), but I will leave you with this...Stories are amazing. I hope you find some in the next year that delight you too!

(PS - This is a blog about puzzles for younger persons. I am not recommending the above books for young readers, just sharing what I've read. That said, most of them could be read by near-teens and teens. And some of them are actually young adult books. There is definitely murder and mayhem in many of these, but as Murderbot says "touching is gross", so not a lot of that kind of thing. Which does lead to the discussion of which bad thing is worse, sex or violence? (and is sex bad??) Anyway, too deep for this blog. And now I've bored you, or incited you. Apologies.)

Spanish Winter Puzzles

I have just posted my newest set of Spanish puzzles with a Winter theme to TPT! Click on the picture to check it out! But I will also tell you about it here...

There are 15 pages of puzzles and activities in this set. It actually contains a couple extra pages. The Cut & Paste activity (with really cute winter stamps from LittleRed) comes with a color version and a b/w version, so you can choose which to use. Some kids like coloring and some don't! Anyhow, there are also two pages of Simon Says puzzles.

Each Spanish set that I create also contains flash cards, a list of the words studied, and a bonus item. This set's bonus item is a set of word jigsaw puzzles. For these, the words and pictures are broken up into vertical strips, with English at the top and Spanish at the bottom. There are two options for using these, that I can think of. You can print them on cardstock and cut them up to use as regular jigsaw type puzzles. This option would be reusable for multiple practice sessions or different classes/students. The other option would be to print out copies for each student. They can then cut and paste onto construction paper and create mini posters or what not. I have scrambled each set of puzzles, just in case you'd like to use this option.

I create these sets with the homeschool parent in mind. I found that my homeschooled students often needed some vocabulary review, and puzzles are a fun way to sneak that in. These sets contain easy to hard puzzles that you can pick through to find something appropriate for the multiple ages in your homeschool. I also think these would work wonderfully for elementary school teachers who teach Spanish to multiple grades.

I hope your Winter season is warm and snuggly with extra hot cocoa or, my newest favorite, hot cinnamon tea! OMG...so delicious!

Cheers!

National Hiking Day Free Fill In Puzzle

National Hiking Day is on November 17th. Download and share this puzzle with your hikers, then hit the trails together!

This puzzle is a fill in style where solvers must figure out where each word will fit into the blank puzzle. The approach for solving these is to count the word lengths and then finding spots where they will fit. The words on this puzzle have been sorted by word length. I would suggest starting with a list that has only one word in it and then finding where that word goes. In this particular case though, I would avoid the 3 letter word as it does not give enough information by itself to move forward. The 10 and 11 letter words are also not amazingly helpful either, but get things moving. This puzzle is a bit tricky, but with a little extra thought (critical thinking skills at work!) it is easily solved. Think of it like a trail with a couple steep hills at the beginning, and then it's all downhill from there!

Enjoy and have a beautiful day!

Wisconsin Puzzles are Live!

Wisconsin puzzles are done! Yes! Now you and your students can have some fun learning All About Wisconsin with this mini puzzle book! There is a lower level book for 2nd and 3rd graders (1st graders might be able to solve these too). You can click on the picture above to purchase this set at The Puzzle Den on Teachers Pay Teachers

Each mini-book contains 15 puzzles filled with facts about Wisconsin, including many of the states symbols, some history, some geography, and just some plain-old silly facts. These are easy to print, but do take a little extra effort to cut in half, stack and staple. But I believe kids love little things, so what could be better than a mini-book!? You can send your students home with a mini-book to work on with their family as part of a unit study on Wisconsin. You can print the books with the answers included at the back, and each set comes with a cover page.

The upper level is also ready! This set is designed for 4th, 5th and 6th graders in mind. Just click on the picture above to purchase this version. Each set costs $5.

This is the 5th state I have completed. You can click here to see all the states that are available now. I am hoping to one day have all 50 states available, but that will take some time. If you have a state you would like to see sooner than later, just leave a comment on this post and I will get right on it!

Wisconsin Puzzles Coming Soon!

Just a quick update ... I have been working on some Wisconsin puzzles, and they are almost finished! They are now getting a thorough testing, but they should be available in my TpT store next week. There will be a mini-book for lower level elementary students and another one for upper level elementary students. Each mini-book is jam packed with information about the state of Wisconsin. And both levels have completely different puzzles. Puzzle types might overlap, but the puzzles themselves are all different. One exception is the flag coloring page, which is pretty much the same for both levels. The upper level is a bit more complex in the description and coloring instructions. Anyhow! The point is that you could purchase both mini-books and combine them to make one HUGE mini-book all about Wisconsin, without too much repetition.

The picture above shows page 3 of the upper level mini-book. It contains 2 puzzles. The first one is a What's Left? puzzle. Students will read about the legend of the Thunderbird (from the Menominee tribe of Wisconsin) and follow instructions for crossing off words. The words that are left will complete the final legendary fact at the bottom of the page! The 2nd puzzle is a maze which takes students on a tour around the state of Wisconsin. Interesting facts are provided!

------
I used a variety of resources around the web for my research. Here is a list of them, in case you'd like to use them to supplement your own unit study of WI.

STATE SYMBOLS

GENERAL HISTORY

FLAG

THINGS TO DO IN WI

LEAD MINING

THUNDERBIRD STORIES

I am out of town. Both my students are in college now and it's their fall break. It's also my mom's birthday. But when I get back I will get these finished up and posted!

Hope your October is lovely!

Signal Flag Decoder Ring

Do your kids like codes? Download this free decoder ring and your kids can start coding up some secret messages using signal flags. They will be practicing their critical thinking skills and doing some coloring too!

I have created 2 pages of secret messages for your kids to decode. The first one is about hamsters! This page also has some room to practice encoding at the bottom.

The second page is all about toes! These are just some random facts that I encoded with the Signal Flag cipher. The decoder ring itself includes some information on how this code is used.

You can click on any of the images to download the decoder ring and the secret messages as one PDF file (answers are at the end). Make sure you have access to Google Drive on your network.

You will want to print all these pages on a color printer. The flags are harder to decode in black & white. Also, print the decoder ring on cardstock paper. Carefully cut it out, place the smaller circle on top of the larger circle, then put a brad through the center so it can turn freely.

Here is a photo of my sample. Unfortunately I no longer own a working color printer (Windows 10 issues) so mine is black & white. It is not as fun without the colors! But I wanted to post a picture of the finished product in case my assembly instructions were not clear.

Also, if your kids like this decoder ring, I have 3 more that you can download. Just click here and you can find the collection.

I hope your kids enjoy this little coding project!

Free School Supplies Word Search

School is starting again soon here in the US! (Or maybe has already started in some states) My kids are both off to college next week! Very nerve-wracking times! We are busy with shot records, haircuts, and packing...to name just a few of the chores. I'm sure everyone with kids in elementary and high school are going through the same things! Maybe you and yours need a little break? Just download this word search and spend a few moments together focusing on something else!

This puzzle was designed for upper elementary aged students, but I'm sure older students would enjoy it also. It is a picture word search, so first you have to identify all the pictures and then you have to remember how to spell them! This isn't a completely easy task. Most of these pictures will be easy to identify, but some might be a little tricky. Is it a backpack, a satchel, or an attache? (that sounds pretentious ... Psych anyone?!?!) Anyhoo, this would also make a fun first-day-of-school assignment for your students. I hope they enjoy it!

Kanoodle Duplexity Review and Answer Key

I picked up Kanoodle Duplexity quite a number of years ago, and I have finally put together an answer key for these puzzles. I wanted to share that with you today, along with a brief review of the puzzle itself.

Kanoodle Duplexity is "a two-tone test of logic and reasoning". It contains 28 magnetic tiles, 200 challenge cards, instructions, and a portable carrying case. The object of the game is to completely fill a challenge card with the appropriate magnetic tiles.

The carrying case has a nice handle, but it is heavy and a bit difficult to open. There is a little hole on the bottom side that you can push your finger into to aid in opening, but it is still tough.

The challenge cards slide into a slot in the bottom front. This makes for a nice place to store the cards. But there is a little lip that catches some of the cards and makes it hard to get all of them out. (I suppose the little hole in the bottom might come in handy here too!)

The inside top of the case has an area where you can store your tiles. The inside bottom is the play area. This is where you will put your selected challenge card and proceed to play.

The magnetic tiles themselves are a bit flimsy and very thin. This makes it hard to manipulate them when you're trying to solve a challenge. Fingernails come in handy here!

Each tile has two colors on it. Some of them are 'doubles' and have the same color twice. There are 7 colors total: red, green, blue, orange, yellow, purple, and gray. Each color has one double tile and a tile with each other color on it. For example, for the color green, you will find a green/green, green/yellow, green/purple, green/orange, green/gray, green/blue, and a green/red. This means that there are only seven tiles with any given color on it, and because of the double tile, only 8 squares on any given challenge card that can be of that color. This becomes important later.

So let's quickly walk through a challenge...

I picked challenge card #117. It has a unique shape, so it is quite easy. First place your card on the magnetic play area, then sort out the tiles with the colors that you need. In this case, you will work with purples, yellow, and grays. Leave all the other tiles up on the storage area. There are only 4 gray tiles in this challenge, so take a moment to consider them. You can see that I have decided to place the yellow/gray tile in the bottom left. This is the only spot where the yellow/gray tile can go. (Sorry about the quality of the photo. The oranges and yellows are very close in color here, but not as bad on the game itself.) Next consider where the gray/gray tile might fit and how the other gray tiles would work around it.

There isn't much to it after that. The rest of the colors will pretty much place themselves. I did pick an easy challenge and there are MUCH, MUCH harder ones in the bunch, but you get the basic idea.

Also note on this challenge, in the lower left, you can place the yellow/yellow and the yellow/purple tiles in two different ways.

In the answer key, I just went with one possible answer for each challenge. There are many challenges where this 2 tile rotation will be possible, both offering a solution.

One other thing to note, the instructions claim that the puzzles get harder the higher up the challenge number. This is simply NOT the case. Any of the large rectangular puzzles (7x8, 6x7, etc) tend to be tricksy, but all the the smaller rectangular puzzles (4x5 etc) are easy. And if the puzzle has a shape or a missing bit out of the center...it is even easier! So if you have picked this puzzle up for your kids, encourage them to do the small rectangles and the crazy shaped ones first. They should have no trouble with those, even the very last level is super simple!

----------------------------------------------------------

Kanoodle Duplexity says it uses your spatial reasoning and problem solving skills. I would agree. But it also tests your patience, as there are some problems with some of the challenges.

The biggest issue that I found was that some of the challenges are unsolvable. I think this may be due to editing errors on the cards. This game needed some better beta testing before being released!

For most of the problem cards, it comes down to the number of colored squares. Remember I mentioned earlier that there can only be 8 squares of any one color on a card? This is the problem that most of them have. Both challenge cards 34 and 35 show 9 gray squares. It is not possible to cover 9 gray squares with only 8 gray tile squares.

Here is a list of the challenges with that issue:
34, 35, 44, 51, 59, 95, 120 and 172

We (my daughter and I) also ran into a troubles solving some of the other cards. I do believe that some of these have editing issues as well, but most of them may just be extra hard!

Here is a list of the challenges that we could not solve:
9, 48, 97, 144, 169, 171 and 198

If anyone else solves any of those, please take a photo and send me the answer! I will add it to the answer key.

----------------------------------------------------------

For two of the problematic challenges, I came up with a workaround. You can see them below.

Challenge #44:

Challenge #171:

----------------------------------------------------------

Finally I offer you the answer key...

Just joking! This is the chicken scratch that Ginny and I jotted down as we solved the challenges. We drew our answers out on graph paper with markers and ended up with 9 pages of kinda crazy stuff! So then it took me a couple years to find the energy to translate and clean everything up into a pdf that is worthy of sharing. And here that is...the real answer key!

So is it worth it? Buying the puzzle or trying to solve the challenges? I ultimately have to say yes. Ginny and I did have a very good time solving these puzzles. I do hope Educational Insights creates a new version with cleaned up challenges and better tiles, but all-in-all a decent puzzle to solve. Before you start solving though, make sure that you note which challenges have issues so you know to skip those. Or keep a copy of the answer key nearby so you can check! It is highly frustrating to try to solve something that simply doesn't work!

I hope this answer key helps! Remember to send me your solutions if you solve any of my missing challenges!
