Christmas Kriss Kross - Free Puzzle

 The Puzzle Den Store

I am currently working on Christmas Puzzle Mini-books for grades K-6.  I have finished grades K-3 so far, and you can find them for sale in my TpT store.  Grade 4 should be out this afternoon and grades 5 & 6 are half way there.

The Puzzle Den - Christmas Kriss Kross

The mini-books for all the grades except Kindergarten include a Kriss Kross puzzle.  (For the younger grades, these puzzles are a little different as each grid gets its own word list.  That makes them easier to solve.)  I got carried away creating these little Kriss Kross grids and had a bunch left over, so I used them to create a free puzzle page!

The word list contains all the words that you will need to place in the grids.  The dark shaded spaces are where you should enter a Christmas related word for each grid.  So the challenge is to figure out which words are Christmas related and then figure out which grid to put them in!  For the page above, there are 2 6-letter-word grids, 2 7-letter-word grids, and 1 9-letter-word grid.  One way to get solving is to count the number of letters in the words in the word list, then you will know which grids they are more likely to belong to.  I have provided a couple of letter clues in 2 of the grids for additional help.

I'm thinking that older elementary students and teens will enjoy this free puzzle.  You can find the answers here.

Bedtime Stories

My daughter is 15 this year, but we still read bedtime stories.  Not every night, but at least 3 or 4 times a week.  (Life is busier than it used to be!)  But instead of picture books or chapter books read out loud by me, we now listen to audio books.  This helps to save my voice, but also allows to me enjoy the stories a little more too.

We recently listened to books 1 to 3 of the Gryphon Chronicles by EG Foley.  These are fun adventures, but are definitely a bit young, more for the older elementary school age.  We also listened to Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor.  This was a fantastic book and we were eager for book 2, but it is not out yet.  So we started another series by the same author called Binti.  We are enchanted by these reads!  I would say Akata Witch is for middle school readers and Binti is for high school and beyond.  These books are filled with myths, legends and traditions of Africa.

So while we listen to bedtime stories, we also do other activities.  I've written about this before here on the blog, but it is one of my favorite ways to spend time with my kids, so I like talking about it.  Although Jack doesn't join us anymore, but he's 17 and cranky!  :-(

Querkles are a color-by-number style of coloring book.  For each page, you pick five colors in a range of dark to light.  We tried different colors a couple of times, but those didn't turn out very well.  Picking different shades of the same color works best for these, and black is usually a decent choice for the darkest color.

Here are some of our favorite results!  You don't know what you will be coloring in before hand.  It is a mystery!  Most of the coloring pages are composed of overlapping circles, of which you color the numbered bits.  Querkles describe themselves as "A Puzzling Color-By-Number Book".  We enjoy this type of coloring more than the regular coloring books.  It is fun to "discover" what you are coloring about half way to the end!

Some of these pages take a couple nights of coloring to finish, and others are pretty simple and we can whip them out in one night.  Of course, if we are at a really interesting part of whatever audio book we are listening too, then we are more motivated to color for longer!

And when our hands get tired from coloring, we sometimes give dot-to-dot books a go.  We found these Extreme Dot-to-Dot books from Mindware to be challenging, but not confusing.  (We have another dot-to-dot book that has line that cross each other and that is rather befuddling at times!)

You can probably tell that we rather enjoy the animal themed books.  For these dot-to-dot we used gel pens (and sometimes glitter gel pens)!  For pages with separate puzzles on each side, we each work on our own page.  But there are several 2 pages spreads in these books, so we each pick a different color pen and get to work.  Generally we stay on one side to keep out of each others way, but sometimes we stray onto to other side too.  It makes for a unique outcome!

You can find out about some of the other activity books we have worked on in these previous blog posts.  (If you are looking for ideas of things you can do with your kids, I highly recommend listening to stories and coloring!)

Free Christmas Word Puzzle

Christmas is coming!  Only 2 more days until December 1st.  Here's a puzzle to get the celebrations started!

In this puzzle, you will find clues to Christmas or winter related words in the first column.  It is your job to figure out the word, then rearrange those letters to find a new word that answers the clue in the second column.  The rearranging of letter is the "transformation" part of the puzzle.

These are appropriate for older solvers as some of the clues might be a bit difficult.  Click on the picture above or here to download the puzzle.  Click here for the answers.

Free Halloween Code Breaker Puzzle

The Puzzle Den - Halloween Code Breaker

Here is another crypto-style Halloween puzzle, but this one is for the younger solvers!  All the words on this page have been encoded using the chart shown at the top of the page.  Students will use the chart to decode those words.  This gives them practice with image recognition and spelling.

You can download the puzzle by clicking on the image above or here. If you encounter problems downloading, try downloading from your home computer.  Many schools block downloads from Google Drive on their networks.

If you are looking for puzzles for older kids, try these Crypto-Families.

I have more Halloween themed puzzles on my Halloween Freebies page.  Check it out!

I hope your kids enjoy this puzzle!

Free Halloween Crypto-Family Puzzles

The Puzzle Den - Halloween Crypto-Families

Halloween is only 3 days away!  Here is another free puzzle to help you celebrate this spooky holiday!  (Just click on the picture or here to download and click here for solutions.)

Crypto-Families are lists of related words that have been encoded using a simple substitution.   This means that each letter of the alphabet has been replaced with a different letter of the alphabet.  It's your job as solvers to crack the code!

These puzzles can be difficult to solve.  There are several clues provided for each of the families.  The first clue is the title of the family.  For instance, the first family is called "Candy" and so you should expect each family member to be a type of candy.  The second clue is the picture next to the title.  This is a hint to what the first word is!  (All but the last family have a picture.)  And the last clue is a hint at the bottom of each list giving the answer to one of the letter substitutions.  Try not to use this hint unless you get stuck!

The Puzzle Den - Free Chart for Decoding or Encoding Simple Substitution Ciphers

I also created this chart for decoding crypto-style puzzles.  You can print off and provide them to your students along with the puzzles.  Each chart should be used for one family.  Students can write in their substitutions as they figure them out.  This page could also be used for enciphering your own codes and creating your own crypto puzzles or secret messages!

Since this puzzle best for older solvers, tomorrow I'll post a code style puzzle for the younger lot.

Happy Halloween!

Free Halloween Rebus Puzzles

The Puzzle Den - Halloween Rebus Puzzles - Easier

Only two more weeks until Halloween and time for some new free puzzles!

I've had a request for more rebus puzzles, and since I didn't have any Halloween ones, that seemed like a good idea.  You can download the one above from Google Drive by clicking on the picture, or here.  This one has easier puzzles.  These are pictures that I think younger kids can identify and spell easily enough.

The Puzzle Den - Halloween Rebus Puzzles - Harder

And you can click on this picture, or here, to download the harder version.  This level has more puzzles to solve and harder pictures to figure out.  Is is a gasoline can, just can, or just gas?  This particular puzzle page includes an opposite picture and a 2 word rebus!

You may want to give younger kids the easier version and older kids the harder version.  You can also give the easier page as a warm-up to the harder page.

Download the answer keys here.

Here are some puzzles for you to try to see if you like them!

New Products and a TpT Sale

The Puzzle Den - Back To School mini book for grade 6

The Puzzle Den - Back To School Bundle for K-6

I have recently added the last mini book in the Back To School series for Grade 6!  These require a bit of cutting and stapling to form a cute mini book of a half page size.  Each grade include 15 puzzles, a cover page, and an answer key.

If you are a homeschooler and need multiple levels, I also just posted the Back To School Bundle.  It includes all the grades from kindergartern to grade 6.  Remember that you can use these for years to come, so if you only have a 1st and 4th grader this year, you will have a 2nd and 5th grader next year!  Every single puzzle in each set is unique.  Puzzle types will repeat (there is usually one word search in each set), but the puzzles themselves are always different!

The Puzzle Den Store

And Teachers Pay Teachers is throwing a sale today only.  So if you need to stock up on some items, now's the time to do it.  All of the items in my store are set at 20% off.  If you use TpTs Promo Code BTSBONUS18 at checkout you will save an extra 5%!

The Letter U Word Search

The Puzzle Den - Letter U Word Search

Today's free puzzle is a word search.  It's a giant U filled with words that start with U!  If you are easily offended, then you may want to skip this one, as I did include words like 'urine', 'uvula', and 'user'.  Honestly, I was thinking of a computer user when I decided to include that one.  And a uvula is mostly harmless.  But I can understand concerns over urine.  If you are giving this to a class full of 8 year old boys, they might start giggling over that word!

In any case, this is a rather packed puzzle, so your solvers may need to be a bit sophisticated in their ability to find and circle words.  Word searches aren't difficult, but some may find them a bit frustrating.

So just a bit about the creation of this puzzle...I was making a magnet word search for my TpT store and this is what I came up with!  It just didn't look much like a magnet, so I redid that entire puzzle.  But I thought this looked rather nicely like a 'U' so I decided to make use of it anyway as a free puzzle for the blog.  Just a head's up for those interested...I am working on a set of magnet puzzles for my Puzzle Den store!

Click on the picture above, or here, to download a copy of this puzzle with solutions included from Google Drive.  If you are downloading from a school network, you may not have permission and will need to wait until you get home to download.

Happy U Hunting!

Dog Word Search

The Puzzle Den - Free Dog Word Search

I recently posted a House Cat Word Search and thought that all the dog lovers out there really deserved a Dog Word Search too!  So this is what I came up with.  Just like the House Cat Word Search, this puzzle is PACKED full of words, which can make things tricky.  Words are hidden up and down, backwards and forwards, and even diagonally.

Click on the picture above or here to download a PDF file containing this word search and the answers.  Sometimes teachers are blocked from downloading on their school networks, so if you have trouble, try downloading from home.

Thinkfun's Roller Coaster Challenge

Thinkfun came out with Roller Coaster Challenge last year and it really is a "Thrill Ride Building Game!"

This game comes with a ton of parts.  It is a bit daunting when you open the box.  Honestly, it's a bit of a challenge getting everything back into the box when you're done too!

It comes with a rule book which goes over the different pieces in detail.  It's a good idea to have this page open when you are getting started.  For the straight track pieces, there are two bits of information that you need to keep in mind.  First, you need to know how long the track is, that is, how far across the game board it will stretch.  There are dots on each piece that indicate the length, so two dots on a piece means it will stretch across two spaces.  Secondly, you have to take into account how far down the tracks are meant to drop.  The color of each track will indicate this, which is why you really need to keep the book open to the above page!  At least until you get used to it.

You will also find some curved track pieces.  These attach to the post pieces and then to the straight pieces.  You can see how the parts connect in the picture above.  You also get a start track and an end track.

Other things that you will find in the box include challenge cards, the game board, a little coaster car, the post pieces, and two tunnels.  But let's not forget the exciting Loop-the-Loop yellow track!  It does make for some fancy roller coasters!

Once you are familiar with the pieces, you pick a challenge card, build the setup pieces, and get to work finishing the track.  When you're done, you send your little coaster car on a fun ride!

Ginny and I completed all the challenges.  We found that while one or two were tricky, they weren't really very hard at all.   The part that took time was building the needed parts for each challenge.

It didn't matter that the challenges weren't that difficult, because we had an absolute blast building all these wonderful coasters!   Jack joined us for some custom building time too.

Even our cat thought this was a pretty cool toy!

I think this was one of Jack's creations.  We built so many, I don't really remember!

We even had fun trying to catch the coaster car in action!  Here it is approaching a tunnel.

And do you see that red smear?  That's the coaster going through the Loop-the-Loop!

I have two tips for building these coasters.  First, build all the required pieces for the challenge before you begin.  Second, begin building at the start track, always working from the tallest tower to the shortest.

Here are some tips if you are experiencing any problems with your tracks.  Some of these tips apply more to custom tracks then to the challenge cards, but it is good to keep them in mind.
1)  Check your connections.  Sometimes they seem secure, but they can come loose as you manipulate other parts of the track into place.
2)  Watch the track heights!  They are critical.
3)  Sometimes the car will hit the top of the tunnel.  That doesn't usually cause problems, but sometimes it flips the car or jams it.  Try some minor adjustments of the tunnel height.
4)  Sometimes the car will jump the track.  It may be that it has too much momentum.  If you create a track with very steep sections close together, this can give it a lot of speed and make it jump off!
5)  Watch the magenta pieces.  They are flat-ish.  If there isn't a steep enough track before the magenta bits, your car may not have enough momentum to make it past them.

Ginny and I give Thinkfun's Roller Coaster Challenge two thumbs up!  It is not overly challenging, but it is loads of fun!

We are wondering if a second set would allow us to make even awesomer tracks.  Hmmm...   :-)
